The RPK is equipped with an integral folding bi-pod that enables the weapon to be fired from a more stable position. There are two versions of the bi-pod in service. The Soviet version consists of two non-adjustable stamped metal legs. The Chinese version (pictured here) features two adjustable legs and a more flexible mounting bracket that makes it easier to use on rough terrain. The photos here show the bi-pod in both the folded and extended positions, as well as with the legs retracted and extended. |

The bolt of the RPK closely resembles the rest of the Kalashnikov
family. The primary difference is that the pistol has been
lengthened to accommodate the longer barrel. The bottom left
picture shows the bolt, spring, and receiver cover, while the other
picture shows a close up of the bolt face.

One of the most distinctive features of the RPK light machine gun is its drum magazine which holds 75 rounds of ammunition. Two major versions of the magazine have been made, one by the Soviet Union and one by China. Both latch onto the magazine well in the same way as the standard magazines, but differ in the way that they are loaded. Their outward appearance is also slightly different. |
|
The back of the Chinese magazine can be seen in the upper left. It features a hinged bottom, two retaining clips in the upper corners, and a tab for winding the spring. On the front of the drum there is a groove that has been stamped into it so that the rounds can be guided towards the top of the magazine. A sling can also be attached to the drum by means of the loop in the bottom left of the picture above. When the retaining clips are removed ammunition is placed inside the drum. The drum is then closed and the spring is wound. At this point the magazine is ready for action. |
This section is dedicated to the major accessories pertaining to the
RPK light machine gun. Below you can see the full array of
accessories: the four cell magazine pouch for the 40 round magazines,
two stripper clips, the RPK weapon manual, the cleaning kit, and a 40
round magazine. A close-up of the manual and magazine pouch can
also be seen here. It should
also be mentioned that the magazines of the RPK are interchangeable
with those of the AK-47.
