The Turn of the Century

No discussion about a nations military can be complete without showing the civilian life of the time.  In this section we will try to paint a mental picture of what life was like in Russia during this era.  Below you can see various items that came from Russia at the turn of the century.  Photographs, bank notes, coins, newspapers, and other such things will be shown here in the future.  For now we only have one item to show you.

10 Ruble Note

Here is a beautifully colored Russian ten Ruble banknote issued in 1909.  The many different colors and complicated patterns were used to prevent counterfeiting.  You may also be able to make out some of the writing on the note.  The serial number of the note is SY-889259.

 

 

5 Ruble Note

Here is a beautifully colored Russian five ruble banknote issued in 1909.  Like the example above the note was printed using many colors and complicated patterns to prevent counterfeiting.  You can also make out the writing on the note and the serial number: UA-151.

 

 

3 Ruble Note

Here is a beautifully colored Russian three ruble banknote issued in 1905.  The many different colors and complicated patterns were used to prevent counterfeiting.  A variety of writing can also be seen on both sides of the note, as can its serial number: SE610876.

 

 

Silver Kopek Coins  (1)

Here you can see both sides of a one ruble silver coin minted in 1901.  When issued it weighed 20 grams.

The front has the value (1 ruble) and the date of minting below the Imperial double headed eagle.  The opposite side has the Tsar's portrait surrounded by writing.

Here you can see both sides of a 50 kopek silver coin minted in 1913.  When issued it weighed 10 grams.

The front has the value (50 kopeks) and the date of minting below the Imperial double headed eagle.  The opposite side has the Tsar's portrait surrounded by writing.

Here you can see both sides of a twenty five kopek silver coin minted in 1913.  When issued it weighed 10 grams.

The front has the value (10 kopeks) and the date of minting below.  While on the reverse it shows the Imperial double headed eagle and the very small letters V and S.

Here you can see both sides of several ten kopek silver coins minted in 1902, 1905, and 1913.  When issued they weighed 1.8 grams.

The front has the value (10 kopeks) and the date of minting below.  The mint initials are also shown (St. Petersburg mint).  While on the reverse it shows the Imperial double headed eagle.  Some show the letters V and S, while others show the letters A and R.

Copper Kopek Coins (1)

Here you can see both sides of a copper five kopek coin minted in 1911.  When issued it weighed 16.38 grams.

The front has the year of minting, the value (5 kopeks) and the mint initials (St Petersburg). The reverse has a Tsarist eagle with writing above and the words five kopeks below.

Here you can see both sides of a copper three kopek coin minted in 1913.  When issued it weighed 9.83 grams.

The front has the year of minting, the value (3 kopeks) and the mint initials (St Petersburg). The reverse has a Tsarist eagle with writing above and the words three kopeks below.

Here you can see both sides of two copper one kopek coin minted in 1912.  When issued they weighed 3.28 grams.

The front has the date (1912), the value (1/4 kopek), and the mint initials (St Petersburg). The reverse has writing above a Tsarist eagle emblem.  The words "one kopek" are found at the bottom.

Here you can see both sides of two copper one quarter kopek coin minted in 1909.  When issued they weighed 0.82 grams.

The front has the value (1/4 kopek), the year of minting, and the mint initials (St Petersburg). The reverse has a Tsar's monogram surrounded with laurels.
