Wars and Campaigns
during the
Age of Napoleon
(1796-1815)

The Napoleonic era was one of great turmoil in Europe.  It can be characterized by constantly shifting coalitions of European powers rallying to fight Napoleon.  Russia entered into many of these alliances, while the rest of her attention was directed at conflicts on her borders.  War with the Turks and Persians over the Caucasus would have to be cut short however, as Napoleon's armies threatened Russia itself.

The main assault came in 1812 when the
Grande Armée crossed into Russia driving all before it.  Napoleon's army advanced as far as Moscow, but forced to retreat amid the frigid Russian winter, and left Russia with only a fraction of the army that he began with.  Russia and her allies would continue to press the attack until Napoleon was defeated and Russian troops occupied Paris.
